130 teachers benefit from overseas training

One hundred and thirty teachers from across Guyana are set to benefit from a four-day workshop organized by School of the Nations in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

The workshop, which commenced yesterday, is being facilitated by 25 trained teachers from the (Limited Resources Teachers Training (LRTT) programme.

The workshop is being held at the School of the Nations located on New Market Street, Georgetown. The trainers include teachers from the United States of America, United Kingdom and the Middle East.

The LRTT’s representatives also facilitated a one-week summer camp at School of the Nations pro bono facility at New Amsterdam and a four-day workshop for teachers there.

LRTT delivers in-service training to teachers in countries with limited resources. The program seeks to address the issue of low quality teaching and learning, by providing a model of high-quality, low-cost teacher training.

Training is based on tested strategies which use international practice while considering local challenges and context.

Every year, during the August holidays, professional teachers travel in groups to different countries to assist children and local teachers.

The countries that benefited last year were Guyana, Ghana, Uganda, India, Nepal, Cambodia, Rwanda and Tanzania. All the volunteers are professional teachers in their respective countries.

Kaieteur News was informed that every year, during the August vacation, teachers from LRTT volunteer to offer their services to developing nations.

They pay their own expense and if they cannot afford, they do fundraising.

Last year, there were 22 volunteers in Guyana, 19 teachers and three team leaders (also teachers). The team also went to Lethem where a one-week workshop was held for teachers in that region.

In the end, certificates were handed over to 136 local teachers who participated in the workshop.
