PRESS RELEASE
The 2024 Because We Cash Grant distribution commences - over 9 billion to be distributed to students nationwide.
June 24, 2024 - In its fourth consecutive year, the Ministry of Education has officially commenced the 2024 distribution of the Because We Care Cash Grant and Uniform Grant, a pivotal initiative aimed at enhancing educational access and support for Guyana’s youth. This program, integral to the nation’s educational advancement efforts, is expected to benefit over 205, 000 school-aged children nationwide this year.
The Because We Care Cash Grant initiative stands as a testament to Guyana’s commitment to investing in the future of its young learners. With an allocation of more than 9 billion dollars in the national budget, the program aims to alleviate financial burdens on families and ensure that every child has the resources they need to thrive in their academic journey.
Today marks the first day of distribution, where parents and guardians across Guyana will receive direct financial assistance that plays a pivotal role in covering educational expenses. From school fees to purchasing essential uniforms and supplies, this support is designed to ease the financial strain that often accompanies the pursuit of education.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand during her visit to Port Kaituma, Region One today, emphasized the government’s unwavering dedication to education, stating that the Ministry and by extension the government, is keen on continuously improving the lives of its citizens, specifically in the hinterland regions.
"Before the end of today, more than 40 million dollars will go into your pockets. Once we have resources, we make sure we invest it back into you. Once we have resources, you feel that in your pockets and your children feel it in their book bags. And even when we had little, we would always find a way to make sure we improve what you have, because that is what this government does," the Minister said.
The impact of this initiative extends beyond immediate financial relief. It underscores the belief that education is a fundamental right and a pathway to prosperity for individuals and the nation as a whole. By ensuring that all children have equal access to education, regardless of economic background, Guyana is nurturing a generation equipped to contribute meaningfully to society.
The distribution of the Because We Care Cash Grant and the Uniform Grant Programme is not only a logistical operation but also a symbolic gesture of support from the government to its citizens. It reflects a collaborative effort between policymakers, educators, parents, and communities to prioritize education as a national priority.
As families receive their grants today and over the next few days, there is a palpable sense of optimism and gratitude among recipients. For many, this financial support represents more than just monetary assistance; it represents hope for a brighter future and the realization of dreams that education can make possible.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Education remains committed to expanding access to quality education and continuing to support initiatives that uplift communities and empower individuals. The Because We Care Cash Grant and Uniform Programme stands as a beacon of progress in Guyana’s educational landscape, promising a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
By the conclusion of 2024, the investment in families the Because We Care Cash Grant initiative will exceed 25 billion dollars accumulated over the last four years. -END-
