The Minister of Education shares a moment at the Vreed-en-Hoop Primary,
Yes, she leads one of the most dynamic ministries in Guyana – a nationwide, multi-tiered workforce deeply involved in curriculum development, student welfare, regional outreach, and even 24-hour educational broadcasting through platforms like radio and TV. That’s the Ministry of Education.
But beyond the policies, programmes, and public appearances, there’s a person and a journey that shaped the leader we see today. So, here’s a fun question,
Did you know these three things about Minister Parag?
Three Facts About Sonia Parag
1. A proud Essequibo-Coast beginning
Born and raised in a small rural community along the Essequibo Coast, she completed her early education there before attending President’s College. Minister Parag later pursued higher studies at the University of Guyana and further earned her legal and professional training at the Hugh Wooding Law School.
2. A lawyer first, a leader always
Called to the Bar in 2007, she spent several years in private practice, building a strong courtroom presence before stepping into the political arena. Nine of thirteen jury decisions concluded in her favour, a track record that demonstrated both diligence and tactical sharpness. More than wins, those years grounded her in real public issues, human stories, and the practical side of governance, an experience she continues to draw from today.
3. A career shaped by service
From 2020 to 2024, she held leadership portfolio transitions across major national sectors, including Public Service and Local Government & Regional Development, before taking the helm of the education sector. Now overseeing the Distance Education Unit (GLC & EDYOU FM) and the wider national school network, she continues to champion greater access, equity, and modern learning opportunities for every corner of Guyana.
