6th Community Library Commissioned at Tain Primary School in Berbice
March 13, 2025 – The Honourable Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, officially commissioned the 6th community library in Berbice at Tain Primary School on Wednesday. This initiative, spearheaded by the National Library, marks another significant step in promoting literacy and digital learning across Guyana.
The newly opened library boasts a collection of approximately 2,000 books, including popular titles such as Nancy Drew, Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and The Baby-Sitters Club. Some of these books were sourced from the school’s existing library collection, further enriching the resources available to the community.
Beyond providing access to books, the library is dedicated to fostering a culture of reading and lifelong learning for both children and adults. To encourage community engagement, a book club will be launched soon, creating a space for literary discussions and shared learning experiences.
Minister Manickchand reaffirmed the Ministry of Education’s commitment to expanding access to libraries nationwide. Currently, there are 25 rural library centres across the country, with plans to significantly increase this number to ensure that every community has access to essential reading and educational resources.
The Ministry of Education and National Library remains dedicated to its mission of enhancing literacy, supporting digital learning, and fostering a love for reading among Guyanese of all ages.
