‘Be committed to learning’ – Min Ramkissoon tells students

As the new academic year gets underway, Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Vikash Ramkissoon, reminded students at the Stewartville Secondary School on Monday that their daily choices and commitment to learning will shape their future.

“What you do from here and every day in your lives will determine who you become,” he said.

He conducted visits to schools across Region Three, engaging with students, teachers and education officials.

The visits include Zeeburg Secondary School, De Willem Secondary School, Tuschen Secondary School and Vergenoegen Secondary School, as the government continues to monitor the start of the 2026–2027 academic year.

At Stewartville Secondary School, Minister Ramkissoon encouraged students to recognise their potential and remain committed to their education.

“Your grades at the common entrance, as we called it before, NGSA, are not a definition of what you can achieve in life. Many of you are just 11. Your true potential cannot be determined at 11,” Minister Ramkissoon told the students.

Minister Ramkissoon also urged students to follow school rules, listen to their teachers and parents, and strive to become leaders.

The minister noted that Stewartville Secondary School has produced several outstanding Guyanese, including Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussein, whom he said was his student.

He also commended the school’s administration, teachers and staff for maintaining a clean and well-kept institution.

The school visits form part of ongoing efforts to ensure a smooth start to the new academic year, with the minister visiting 126 of 128 schools across Region Three, which are now open for the 2026–2027 term.
