Cynthia Opara was among thousands of parents who expressed gratitude for the government’s distribution of the ‘Because We Care’ Cash Grant, which got underway on Monday at several schools across Guyana.
Opara, who visited the Cummings Lodge Secondary School to uplift her daughter’s grant, described it as timely assistance that will help ease the cost of preparing children for the new school year.
An elated Cynthia Opara.
“Honestly, I’m so much overwhelmed with joy for the opportunity to receive this amount of money…I really want to thank the government for making it possible for every citizen of Guyana to get this,” she told the Department of Public Information (DPI).
She also commended the distribution process, describing it as very smooth and easy.
Sentiments which were echoed by other parents who said the increased grant comes at a critical time, as families prepare for the new academic year.

Single mother Stacy Boston welcomed the $85,000, noting that school expenses continue to rise.
She said the additional support will help her purchase the supplies her child needs and expressed appreciation for the government’s continued investment in education.
Shenika Heywood told DPI that she was excited to receive the grant.
She explained that it will significantly reduce the financial pressure associated with purchasing school materials.

She added that the increased allocation means she will not have to go into her own pocket to adequately prepare her child for school.
In 2025, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Government committed to further enhancing the programme during its second term in office. As a result, the grant has been increased from $50,000 to $60,000, with the uniform grant of $5,000, bringing it to $65,000.
A new $20,000 transportation grant was added. This is another commitment made and fulfilled by the Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali-led administration. This brings the total support to $85,000 per child registered in the public or private school system.
