Participants from over 25 countries worldwide witnessed the launch of Caribbean Visionary Educators (CVE) via Zoom on Wednesday 1st July 2020.

CVE, the brainchild of Dr. Freddy James, lecturer at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine Campus, was established in 2019 by a team of professional educators working at various levels of the education sector, and its executive currently includes members from Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Barbados and Jamaica. CVE is a professional learning community tasked with educational development through the creation, sharing and discourse of indigenous Caribbean-focused educational resources and services to support educators and learners.

The mission of CVE is to create and share Caribbean focused knowledge, educational resources, and research for educators and learners globally through interactive, multimodal platforms facilitated by practitioners.

Dr. Heather Cateau, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, St Augustine and a historian at heart delivered the feature address at this launch. In sharing some powerful truths about the history of the Caribbean, she highlighted that “the Caribbean is a diverse multiethnic society with a creole culture and as such many societal issues have become visible”. She advocated that the “time for change is now! There must be a re-think by educators of what we do, how we do it and why we do it, being mindful of how we are preparing a next generation.” She questioned “does one size fit all” in education?

Dr. Cateau proposed that there is need for a bridge into “new and revised incites” and she suggested that educators should be that bridge to make the kind of difference that is needed. She congratulated Dr Freddy James and her team for what she thinks is “an amazing association” and welcomed the CVE as “a forum that is much needed” for transforming our societies.

Also featured at this launch was Dr Laurette Bristol who brought greetings from the CARICOM Secretariat. Dr Bristol congratulated the CVE on this initiative, its commitment to education, the intellectual development and enhancing the citation context of the Caribbean. She saw the CVE as “a model of creative collaboration for innovative life-long learning, inclusivity and respect for the intellectual assets of the Caribbean.”

Not only were participants addressed by brilliant minds in education but they were also entertained by the melodious tunes of pannist Emmanuel Joseph, a passionate rendition of spoken word by Dr Crystal Skeete-St. Hillaire, and the sweet background sounds of Caribbean music provided by violinist Marc Harroo.

The Launch culminated with a guided tour of the multi-faceted website @ www.cariveducators.com which houses a repository of indigenous, Caribbean focused educational resources, technological tools and research. The website’s discussion forum provides a voice and learning opportunities for practitioners, students and other stakeholders. The site, which is quite expansive and user-friendly, affords visitors a free membership sign up before they can peruse its contents. Comments posted by the eager participants to the Launch surely indicated their enthusiasm and appreciation for this timely initiative.

Ultimately, Caribbean Visionary Educators (CVE) is a professional learning community committed to helping educators enhance their practice by providing an independent forum for stakeholder voices, idea sharing and support on issues in the teaching and learning environment.

Caribbean Visionary Educators (CVE) invites you to join them on their journey to becoming the leading provider of indigenous Caribbean educational resources. Educators at all levels and other interested persons are invited to submit original resources that you have created that can help other educators.
