CPCE eyes STEM degree, specialised training in Science & Maths

The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) is preparing to strengthen teacher training through a proposed associate degree in STEM Education and specialised instruction in Science and Mathematics for Early Childhood and Primary Education trainees.

According to the Ministry of Finance’s 2026 half-year report, consultations are ongoing for the college to offer the associate degree in the second half of the year. The proposed programme, covering Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, is intended to improve problem-solving abilities, critical thinking skills and technological competencies among teachers and students.

The report also states that with effect from September 2026, CPCE will offer specialised Science and Mathematics training to trainees pursuing Early Childhood and Primary Education studies. This initiative is expected to strengthen trainee teachers’ capabilities and improve students’ performance in both subjects.

The focus on these areas places greater emphasis on equipping teachers to build children’s scientific understanding and mathematical skills from the earliest stages of their education.

Meanwhile, more than 1,700 teachers across all levels participated in continuous professional development training during the first half of 2026. The report further noted that 2,000 teachers are expected to graduate later this year.
