PRESS RELEASE | Cyril Potter College of Education Hosts Open Day to Attract Aspiring Teachers

May 15, 2025 – The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), Guyana’s premier teacher training institution, today hosted its Annual Open Day, drawing more than 400 enthusiastic prospective teacher trainees.

Among the attendees were many individuals already serving in the public education system who expressed a strong desire to become formally trained and certified teachers through CPCE’s nationally recognized programmes.

The Open Day provided a comprehensive look at the college’s academic offerings, giving attendees the opportunity to engage with faculty members, current students, and support staff. Through interactive sessions and guided tours, participants were able to explore the three major levels of teacher education offered by CPCE: Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary, and understand how these programmes align with the Ministry of Education’s goal of ensuring every classroom is led by a trained educator.

The College offers a range of programmes designed to meet the diverse needs of the education system. These include the Associate Degree in Education, which covers general teacher preparation; the Associate Degree in Special Education; the Associate Degree in Health and Family Life Education; and the Associate Degree in Literacy Studies.

Additionally, CPCE offers one-year programmes in Graduate Teacher Education and Technical Teacher Education for individuals who already hold certain qualifications but wish to become certified educators.

Within these programmes, candidates can specialize in a variety of focus areas. At the Early Childhood and Primary levels, students receive targeted training in child development and foundational learning strategies. At the Secondary level, specialization areas include Academic subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, Modern Languages (Spanish and French), Social Studies, and Science. In addition, CPCE prepares teachers in the Allied Arts, specifically Physical Education, Visual Arts, and Music, as well as in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which includes Home Economics, Agricultural Science, Business Studies, Industrial Technology, and Information Technology.

The Cyril Potter College of Education continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the Ministry of Education’s vision for quality education through professional teacher preparation. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the CPCE website at http://www.cpce.edu.gy for application details and additional information.

Following today’s successful launch, CPCE is also expected to host Open Day activities at several other locations across the country: Vreed-en-Hoop in Region 3 on May 20, New Amsterdam and Rose Hall in Region 6 on May 21, Anna Regina in Region 2 on May 22, and both Linden in Region 10 and Belladrum in Region 5 on May 23. Dates for outreach to the hinterland regions will be announced soon.
