The Guyana Industrial Training Centre’s 60th Anniversary Public Awareness Day was met with an encouraging turnout from students, trainees, educators, and stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, including representatives from SBM and other key industry partners.
The event provided students with a meaningful opportunity to engage directly with the world of Technical and Vocational Education and Training through live demonstrations, exhibits, and skills displays. From welding and electrical installation to plumbing, motor vehicle repair, machining, information technology, and other high-demand trades, the day highlighted the many pathways available to young people through practical, hands-on training.
Delivering remarks at the opening ceremony, Dr. Ritesh Tularam, Deputy Chief Education Officer – Technical, underscored the important role GITC continues to play in preparing Guyana’s workforce for the future. He noted that for six decades, the institution has helped shape the country’s technical and vocational landscape by empowering young people and adults with practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional values that support employment, entrepreneurship, and national development.
Dr. Tularam also reminded those gathered of the growing importance of skills training as Guyana continues to expand across key sectors, including construction, manufacturing, information technology, hospitality, transportation, and oil and gas. As he stated, “TVET is not a second choice; it is a smart choice.” He further emphasised that the skills gained through institutions like GITC are “tools for independence, innovation, and lifelong success.”
