Several students from the Mackenzie High School presently make up the Cadet Corp of the Guyana Peoples Militia in Linden.
The group is known as the Cadet Company of Mackenzie High School and is a pilot project in Region Ten.
The children have been divided into three platoons, which have been further broken down into three sections for management purposes, according to Captain Salim October.
Captain October said that the Corps which was established late last year will run for six months.
He said that the newly established Cadet Corps is a revitalization of what used to happen in schools in the past.
Captain October, who is tasked with the responsibility of running the reserve component in Linden, said that there are two companies, the Cadet Company and the regular reserve Company which is the other arm of the Guyana Peoples Militia.
He pointed out that the cadet programme is a revitalization of what earlier existed and it is where opportunities are created for persons of school age to engage in meaningful activities that are structured to “build on body, mind, soul and spirit.”
“It provides a framework where a young person can ensure they have the opportunity to develop self-self awareness and the social capital of the individual would be so built that their esteem, confidence and their life outlook is fostered.”
October said that the Cadet Programme cannot be possible without meaningful engagement of partners and stakeholders.
He said that was of critical importance to the Linden Branch of the Guyana Peoples Militia, which has support from the Regional organs, the education Ministry, the Guyana Defence force and other important stakeholders.
“Our role in the Guyana Peoples Militia is to ensure that the young people under our guidance can go back to their communities and be a catalyst for transformation.”
Region Ten Chairman Rennis Morian, who visited the school on Friday, commended the children on taking up the Cadet Corps challenge and exhorted them to continue to aim for high ideals.
He exhorted the cadets to make the most of the opportunity offered.
“I am happy for this Cadet Corps. It is an opportunity for you to grow and develop yourselves.”
The students are being exposed to military drills and other requisite life skills. Three teachers from the school who were exposed to the necessary military training are also integrally involved in the training of the Cadet Corps.
