The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education recently convened a crucial meeting to enhance health services within schools. The discussions centered on ongoing school screening programs in nursery and primary schools, with plans underway to expand screenings to secondary institutions.
Key areas of focus included engaging Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to foster greater awareness and involvement in student health, establishing a clear referral pathway for mental health and substance use concerns, and implementing capacity-building initiatives for educators. The concept of health-promoting schools was also explored, emphasizing a holistic approach to student and teacher well-being.
Additionally, the ministries discussed the introduction of health screenings for teachers, ensuring their well-being aligns with the broader goal of fostering a healthy learning environment.
Present at the meeting were Dr. Ertenisa Hamilton, Director of Primary Care Services (MoH); Dr. Niccollette Tamayo, Programme Manager at Mount Sinai; Dr. Farrah December, Coordinator of the MoH School Health Unit; Chief Education Officer Mr. Saddam Hussin; Deputy Chief Education Officer (School Support Unit) Ms. Fazia Baksh; Assistant Chief Education Officer (Secondary) Mr. Sherwyn Blackman; and Senior Education Officer Mr. Kerwin Jacobs.
