Honouring a legacy of courage and sacrifice
Earlier this morning, on behalf of President Irfaan Ali, Hon. Sonia Parag, Minister of Education, joined a gathering of workers, GuySuCo officials, and representatives of the Women’s Progressive Organisation to pay tribute to Kowsilla (Alice), the fallen sugar worker and labour heroine who died 62 years ago, while standing her ground for justice and workers' rights.
On March 6, 1964, Kowsilla was high-handedly crushed to death by a tractor driven into a line of striking workers at the Leonora Sugar Estate as she and several other women formed a peaceful human barricade to protest unfair labour practices.
This has since left an indelible mark on our nation's history, and the legacy of Guyanese women, especially on the heels of International Women’s Day.
