The Ministry of Education on Sunday morning took its “Steps for Education” Initiative into the streets, as hundreds of students, teachers and education stakeholders participated in a fitness walk to mark Education Month.

The walk began at the Ministry of Education on Brickdam, proceeding along Camp Street before concluding at the Education Ground on Carifesta Avenue.

Schools and participants from Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six, as well as Georgetown and Linden, took part in the activity.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag, addressing participants at the Education Ground, said the fitness walk forms part of the ministry’s calendar of activities for Education Month, celebrated in September.

The minister stated that the event reflects this year’s theme, “From Classrooms to Communities: Education Transforms Lives,” emphasising that education remains a key driver of personal and national development.

“Every parent who sends their child to school, every teacher who gives their time to deliver in the classroom, and every student who invests in themselves is transforming their life through education,” Minister Parag said.

The minister stressed that the walk represents both literal and figurative steps towards the development of education, encouraging students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them through education.

She urged students to remain committed to their academics while actively participating in sports and other extracurricular activities, noting that these opportunities can help them develop their skills and reach greater heights.

The minister also encouraged students to promote kindness and become ambassadors in the fight against bullying and violence in schools.

The “Steps for Education” fitness walk is among several activities being held by the Ministry of Education throughout September as part of Education Month and the start of the 2026/2027 school year.
