Karrau Secondary boosts education access in Region 7

Residents of the riverine community of Karrau in Lower Mazaruni, Region Seven, are welcoming the construction of a new secondary school.

The school is 85 per cent complete. It is expected to improve access to education for students within the area.

During an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Thursday, Toshao Shane Cornelius said the project marks a major step forward for the community’s long-term development plans.

He stressed the need for a secondary school, noting the village’s growing population and strategic location.

“The secondary school is a very important project for the village because it is something the village has always wanted. It is within our 10-year village plan, so to see it becoming a reality is very important for us as a growing community,” Toshao Cornelius stated.

He believes the new facility will reduce travel time and help protect students from several social and environmental challenges.

The school, along with teachers’ quarters to accommodate five educators, is estimated to cost close to $400 million. The investment includes furnishing, electrical installation and solar-powered systems.

Construction of the facility is being undertaken in phases, with the initial rollout expected to cater for grades seven and eight before expanding to full capacity.

Approximately 300 students are expected to benefit from the institution.

Toshao Cornelius said the Karrau Village Council has been working closely with the Ministry of Education, the regional administration and the Department of Education throughout the process.

“We have always maintained a close relationship with the government. They have been very supportive of the village, particularly in the area of education, and we continue to work hand in hand on initiatives that benefit our people,” the toshao noted.
