PRESS RELEASE | Library Launched at St. Ignatius Primary School in Region 9

The Honourable Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, engaged with students and officially launched a new library at St. Ignatius Primary School on Saturday, November 23, a significant step in fostering a love for reading and expanding access to educational resources in Region 9.

The library, which is now open to the students and teachers of St. Ignatius Primary, features a wide selection of books catering to various age groups and interests. It also provides dedicated spaces for quiet reading, group study, and storytelling, creating an inviting environment for learning and creativity.

During her visit, Minister Manickchand chose to interact directly with the students, encouraging them to embrace the opportunities the library offers. She shared her own passion for reading and highlighted how books can open the door to knowledge, adventure, and personal growth.

The students enthusiastically welcomed the library, and many eagerly explored the bookshelves during the launch.

The library’s establishment is part of the Ministry of Education’s Libraries in Primary Schools Initiative, which seeks to enhance literacy and academic outcomes nationwide. By providing quality resources and spaces for discovery, the initiative aims to bridge gaps in education and ensure that children in every region, including hinterland communities, have equal opportunities to succeed.

This project also underscores the Ministry’s commitment to reducing educational disparities and building strong foundations for learning. By opening libraries in schools like St. Ignatius, the Ministry is fostering not only literacy but also critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong love for reading.

As the Ministry looks ahead, plans are underway to expand this initiative to additional schools and incorporate digital tools to complement traditional reading materials. These developments will further enrich the learning experience for students and help to prepare them for an ever-evolving world.
