- part of World Environment Day 2018 observances

How to “beat plastic pollution” was the topic that engaged primary school students and their teachers yesterday at the Promenade Gardens.

The event was hosted by Georgetown Town Clerk Royston King, and councillors, in observance of World Environment Day 2018.

Teachers of West Ruimveldt and St Ann’s Primary Schools said that it is important for students to be well-informed about the benefits of a healthy environment. They noted that this younger generation will be better equipped to transfer their knowledge to others, thereby helping to curb environmental issues.

“World Environment Day plays an integral role for children since as the future leaders, they will be the ones who will have to help in curbing the situation”, West Ruimveldt, teacher, Edgar Sandy told the Department of Public Information.

St Ann’s Primary teacher Shelon Simon said one should not wait for students to get older to educate them about the environment. She noted, “It is fundamental that these children acquire these skills now, so when they enter secondary school they are already knowledgeable.”

Ten-year-old, Shevoya of Redeemer Primary School said, “I learnt that we should not litter and throw garbage in the drains because it will bring flies and rats, and we cannot live in a nasty environment. We also need to replant trees in our backyards, stop leaving our pipes to leak because it will cause mosquitoes to come and that can cause diseases like filaria and lots more.”
