Mahdia Primary equipped with new washrooms– Min Parag

Minister of Education Sonia Parag has clarified that students of Mahdia Primary School have access to eight newly constructed washrooms, following the circulation of photographs on social media showing an older sanitary facility at the school.

Speaking on Wednesday, she said the photographs did not reflect the facilities currently being used by students.

“There were toilets that were shown in a picture from Mahdia Primary School and they did not bother to tell the public that an entirely new sanitary block was built with eight washrooms, new washrooms, new toilets installed in those washrooms for students,” the minister explained.

She added that the older facility had been secured and was no longer available for use.

“The older toilets and washrooms were closed off to the public. But a parent went and broke the locks on the unused toilets and the old toilets and took pictures of those to put them out [and] misrepresent to the public that that is what exists,” she said.

The minister said the photographs did not provide a complete picture of the sanitary facilities available at the school.

She also urged members of the public to exercise caution when assessing information circulated on social media, particularly claims concerning schools and other public facilities.

“The public needs to hear this. Whenever someone on the opposite side decides they’re going to put out a narrative or a picture, it’s not representing the facts the majority of the time,” Minister Parag said.

The education minister maintained that the new sanitary block is available for students, as the ministry continues efforts to improve facilities and provide suitable learning environments at schools across the country.
