Minister of Education Addresses CANACOM Assembly, Emphasizing Youth Empowerment, Targeting Social Issues by faith based institutions.

May 16, 2025- The Honourable Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, moments ago delivered an address at the Assembly of the Caribbean and North America Council for Mission (CANACOM), hosted in Guyana under the theme “Creation Laments: Journeying with Liberating Hope Towards Peace.” The opening service was held at the Burn’s Memorial Presbyterian Church.

CANACOM brings together Reformed churches from the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States, including local member churches such as the Guyana Congregational Union, the Presbytery of Guyana, and the Guyana Presbyterian Church (GPC).

A core focus of the assembly is on fostering youth leadership through its Youth and Mission (YAM) initiative, which brings young people from both regions together for camps centered around service and community development projects.

In her remarks, the Minister of Education underscored the importance of empowering youth as agents of change, highlighting the need to provide young people with opportunities, tools, and spaces to lead with courage and compassion. She also addressed the urgency of ending gender-based violence (GBV) and tackling the realities and impacts of social issues, calling for collective action and honest, informed and responsible faith-driven advocacy in these areas.

The assembly serves as a dynamic platform for dialogue, reflection, and collaboration among faith communities, with a strong focus on building peaceful and resilient societies through justice, sustainability, and hope.

The participation of the Minister, herself a Presbyterian, reinforced the Government of Guyana’s commitment to working alongside faith-based organizations and international partners to uplift communities, support youth development, and address pressing social and other challenges.
