The Ministry of Education, through its Special Education Needs/Disabilities Sector, hosted an activity themed “Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights” to promote greater awareness, inclusion, accessibility, dignity and respect for the rights of Deaf individuals.
The initiative reinforced the ministry’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive schools, workplaces and communities where persons with disabilities are afforded equal opportunities to participate, contribute and thrive.
As part of the proceedings, the ministry recognised organisations that have demonstrated a commitment to inclusive employment by providing opportunities for persons with disabilities, including those who are Deaf. The Ministry of Health, Guyana Marriott and Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) were specifically acknowledged for their efforts in promoting workplace inclusion.
Following the formal programme—which featured presentations, personal experiences, cultural items and sign language interpretation focused on equal opportunities and communication—participants engaged in breakout sessions.
Teachers and learners participated in one-on-one conversations to share their experiences, outline challenges, and identify areas where the Ministry of Education can provide additional support to improve access and make teaching and learning more effective.
