The Ministry of Education and Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will allow the power company to train students from various technical institutes across the country, with the guarantee of employment upon the successful completion of their studies.

In the first year alone, the partnership guarantees employment for more than 140 trainees across various fields, including clerical officers, specialised technicians, and Health and Safety professionals.

The comprehensive agreement was signed between Kesh Nandlall, Chief Executive Officer of GPL, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ms Shannielle Hoosein-Outar, along with the Deputy Chief Education Officer with responsibility for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Dr Ritesh Tularam.

The four TVET institutions which will benefit from this initiative are the Georgetown Technical Institute (GTI), the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI), the Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI), and the Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre (UCITC).

As per the agreement, GPL will ensure that the technical curricula are aligned with modern industry standards. It will also provide industry experts for classroom mentorship and offer practical workplace experiences for the lecturers.

The utility provider will also explore providing students with financial support and safety gear, with standard review measures in place to protect student welfare.
