NCERD English Unit Hosts Inaugural National English Clinic
(September 18, 2024) – The Ministry of Education has taken another step towards transforming the education sector with the inaugural National English Clinic. The clinic was organized by the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) English Unit and hosted at the Umana Yana. This pioneering event catered to learners and teachers from Grades 5, 6, 10, and 11, offering immersive and interactive experiences aimed at improving English language skills.
Participants engaged in a variety of activities, including narrative writing, composition, vocabulary building, dramatization, and poetry strategies. The clinic was designed to provide both students and educators with practical tools to enhance their understanding of effective English teaching and learning methods.
NCERD Director, Ms. Oma Ramdin, emphasized the importance of skill development, highlighting that the clinic focuses on key areas such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. She noted that the interactive sessions—comprising role-playing, group discussions, and practical exercises—allow participants to apply their learning in a supportive environment. Personalized feedback from instructors was also a key component, helping each participant identify areas for improvement and receive tailored advice.
Ms. Ramdin further stated that the clinic is an excellent opportunity for building confidence, both for academic and professional purposes, by creating a relaxed yet motivating atmosphere for learning English.
This initiative stemmed from the recognition that a more dynamic and engaging approach to language learning is necessary to capture the attention of today’s students. The term "English Clinic" was coined to reflect the careful observation, questioning, and listening that took place throughout the sessions, followed by targeted strategies for performance enhancement. This approach is expected to resonate with participants and lay a strong foundation for continuous language development.
