The National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD) hosted its annual prize-giving ceremony in the auditorium to celebrate the winners of the National Laboratory Competition, organized in observance of UNESCO's World Science Day for Peace and Development.
This yearly event by NCERD's Science Unit aims to foster a hands-on learning culture and promote practical laboratory work across schools in Guyana.
The National Laboratory Competition, the first of its kind, encouraged schools to showcase functional, safe, and well-equipped laboratories. Schools with one lab entered the Junior Category, while those with two or more labs entered the Senior Category. Each participant school submitted a video and a written report detailing their lab layout, safety measures, technology integration, and collaborative spaces, among other features. Submissions were judged by a panel of expert science educators from the Ministry of Education and the University of Guyana.
Winners in both categories were awarded trophies and materials to enhance their laboratory facilities. First-place winners also received essential chemicals for their labs, recognizing their commitment to fostering interactive, safe, and productive laboratory environments.
Results of the National Laboratory Competition:
Senior Category •
•1st Place: Saint George’s School of Science
• 2nd Place: Abram Zuil Secondary
• 3rd Place: Christ Church Secondary Junior Category
Junior Category•
• 1st Place: Leguan Secondary
• 2nd Place: La Bonne Intention (LBI) Secondary
• 3rd Place: Kwakwani Secondary
