New digital system to track students’ progress at technical training institutions

The Ministry of Education has launched a new digital system to monitor students’ progress and the performance of technical and vocational training institutions across Guyana, as part of efforts to improve the management of skills training programmes.

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Education Management Information System (TVET-EMIS), launched on Monday with support from UNESCO, will allow institutions to manage information on students, lecturers and training programmes in one centralised platform.

The system will also provide the ministry with data to assess how institutions are performing, identify areas needing improvement and make decisions on funding, equipment and other resources.

Education Minister Sonia Parag said the initiative forms part of the government’s wider efforts to digitise public services and improve efficiency in the education sector.

“The true measure of progress is when you have the desired goal, making the necessary impact in the life of someone,” Parag said at the launch.

She said technical and vocational education had improved significantly in recent years, with greater access to training and investments in modern equipment and laboratories.

There are currently 29 technical and vocational institutions across Guyana, ten of which fall under the Ministry of Education.

Parag said a contract was recently signed for the construction of a technical training centre in Region Eight, which would ensure that every administrative region has such a facility.

Deputy Chief Education Officer for Technical Education, Dr Ritesh Tularam, said the new platform would help institutions better manage training programmes and monitor students’ performance.

“It solidly supports post-secondary institutions in managing skills training programmes, monitoring students’ progress and assessing institutional performance and making evidence-based decisions,” Tularam said.

He explained that institutional heads and trained personnel would be responsible for entering and managing information on the system.

The ministry expects the platform to improve access to information across training institutions and government agencies, allowing officials to better assess performance and plan for the country’s growing demand for skilled workers.
