To spread Christmas Cheer and to jumpstart the season for hundreds of children the Honourable Minister of Education Priya Manickchand distributed Christmas gifts to over 1200 Children in Region at several communities on Friday.
The Education Minister and her team first visited the Vive-la-Force Primary School and then moved to the Patentia Primary and Nursery Schools, the Wales Primary Schools, the Sisters Nursery School, the La Retraite Primary and Nursery Schools and the Den Amstel Primary and Nursery Schools.
The Minister was accompanied to the nine schools by the Regional Chairman Shaik Ishan Ayube, Regional Vice-Chairman Mr. Omesh Satyanand and Education Officers attached to the Region.
During her visits Minister Manickchand reminded the children and parents about the reason for the season and the significance of the birth of Christ.
“Try to remember what is important. When Christ was born, hope was given to all mankind. Hope for a loving life, peace in your family, peace in the world. That is really the message of Christmas, peace, joy and happiness,” Minister Manickchand explained.
She told those in attendance that whether they had a little or a lot, it is a good time to remember that riches aren’t needed to be healthy and that they need to cherish their relatives and friends.
Moreover, Minister Manickchand said that it was necessary to have the exercise in the aforementioned communities because many parents of students attending these schools lost their jobs and would have suffered further due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She said that it is the intention of the Ministry that the children and parents can feel some sort of relief with the gifts.
Minister Manickchand said that she understands parents want a better life for their children than what they have. She told the parents that the Government of Guyana lead by His Excellency, President Dr. Irfaan Ali is working continuously to provide a better life for all Guyanese.
She encouraged the parents to keep their children engaged with the worksheets that are being distributed to schools and with the content being aired on the Guyana Learning Channel.
The Regional Chairman thanked the Minister of Education for the initiative and expressed his confidence that Minister Manickchand has the ability and vision to move the education sector forward in Guyana.
He added, that children have an important role to play in moving the country forward. The Regional Chairman said that it is the recognition of this role that is responsible for the Ministry of Education not allowing the pandemic to subdue the sector.
He said that the Ministry has been working to ensure children have the necessary educational materials despite schools being closed for most students.
Also delivering remarks was the Vice-Chairman while the various exercises were chaired by the Head teachers and Deputy Head teachers.
