Over 4,000 expressed interest in Digital Summer School

More than 4,000 students have since expressed interest in the Ministry of Education’s digital summer school programme, which will officially launch this weekend and target students from grades three to 11.

The Department of Public Information (DPI) spoke with the Programme Manager, Phillipe Walker, on Thursday, who stated that the initiative is also preparing students for the nationwide rollout of the Guyana Digital School platform in September.

“We’re using the summer school to help young students get acquainted with the platform and to have experience of what the portal will look like for them,” Walker said.

Along with core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies, students will be able to explore specialised areas including coding, artificial intelligence, robotics, business, creative arts and sports. The programme also features lessons in public speaking, digital citizenship, leadership and personal development.

“School life should not just be about academic pressure. It should be a holistic experience that teaches both hard and soft skills,” Walker explained.

Meanwhile, parents are encouraged to participate through dedicated online courses on topics such as internet safety and supporting children’s learning.

The programme manager further noted that the initiative aligns with the Ministry of Education’s efforts on social media awareness as they gain skills in this digital era.

Walker also noted that students without access to devices or internet connectivity will be able to use the ministry’s digital school hubs countrywide, ensuring the programme remains accessible to all.

The summer school ends on August 7, 2026.
