Minister of Education, Hon. Priya Manickchand, turned the sod today for the construction of a new wing at the JC Chandisingh Secondary School in Berbice. The ceremony was attended by Regional Education Officer Sattish Udit, other government officials, and the school’s headmistress.
The new extension, which will cost approximately $200 million, will be constructed at the back of the school compound and will feature modern educational facilities, including a multipurpose hall, classrooms, a computer lab, a science lab, a visual arts room, a home economics room, smart classroom among others.
Minister Manickchand said that this initiative is part of a broader national effort to improve and expand educational facilities across the country. She noted that JC Chandisingh Secondary School has a strong academic reputation, attracting students who could have chosen national schools in Georgetown but instead opted to study in Berbice.
She added that while this expansion is a significant investment, the ministry is also considering an even further extension to comprehensively meet the school’s needs, based on recommendations from parents and the school board.
Board Chair of the JC Chandisingh Secondary School, Adrian Anamayah, expressed gratitude for the project and lauded the government’s commitment to education. He stated that the vision is to ensure that everything available at Queen’s College is also available at JC Chandisingh so that students who choose to study there receive the same quality of education.
He noted that this massive undertaking would not be possible without the Ministry of Education and the Government of Guyana.
