The Special Education Needs (SEN) Unit of the Department of Education - Region Six continues to roll out its Autism Month activities through heightening awareness of the developmental disability.
On April 15, Ms Hulda Fraser met with members of the Prenatal Clinic of the Health Centre in the Skeldon Hospital compound.
At this outreach, she discussed what autism is, some of the signs and symptoms of autism and identified some of the therapy parents of children with autism can access.
In her closing remarks, she reminded parents that autism is complex and that they need to show love and support to persons living with Autism. At the end of the discourse, she was approached by a parent Gyanwatee Narine who shared her journey on living and supporting her son Elijah Narine who had autism. Her son died last year but she described him as being an amazing, loving and special child.
Spreading awareness and sensitizing the public has been a main focus of the SEN Unit during this month.
