‘Sounds out of Africa’ concert set to blow viewers away

—Administrator of the National School of Music says

Persons should be prepared to be “blown away by the sweet ‘Sounds out of Africa’ concert” that will spotlight music that features the African experience in the Caribbean post-emancipation.

This was disclosed by Administrator of the National School of Music Andrew Tyndall during an interview with DPI.

“The Department of Culture is going to showcase the music developed and produced by Africans in the Caribbean-post emancipation. It is known that the enslaved Africans were not allowed to practice their culture, therefore, post-slavery, what you saw was the development of a culture influenced by the African – the development of a new culture. From this today we have genres like Reggae, Shanto, Calypso, Soca and our folk music,” Tyndall explained.

The concert will be aired on August 2 at 6pm on NCN television and Facebook page as well the Department of Culture’s social media pages.

Tyndall said the aim is to garner an understanding and appreciation of the African culture and several well-known local artistes have already come onboard the event.

“You will see performances from the likes of Mark Batson, Jackie Jaxx, Charmaine Blackman, Aruba Singers, Alabama, Diana Chapman, Tennica Defreitas among others. I think it will be a good concert because we will be focusing on several genres.”

The administrator noted that while Guyanese usually anticipate the activities hosted at the National Park and in Berbice, this year’s virtual celebration will be entertaining.

This year’s Emancipation Day is celebrated under the theme, “Overcoming challenges through innovation.”
