The Special Education Needs (SEN) Unit of the Department of Education - Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) hosted an Autism Awareness Forum on the 29th April 2021 at the Lachmansingh Primary School under the theme "Celebrating our Differences through Awareness, Acceptance and Support."

The event was attended by headteachers, teachers, parents, caregivers, health officials and children with special needs within the region.

Ms. Akeshia Benjamin Education Officer - SEN attached to the Region highlighted in the overview that the major aim of the forum was to provide the avenue for members of the public to be sensitized of various aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and how those who are challenged can be supported.

Opening Remarks and the Feature Address were given by Mrs. Deon Lyn Lewis-Clarke - Regional Education Officer and Ms. Savvie Hopkinson - National SEN Officer respectively.

Additionally, pertinent information on Autism was presented by Ms. Simone Abrams, Education Officer - SEN of Region Four, Mr. Wainwright McIntosh, Education Officer - SEN of Region Six and Mr. Gordon Roberts, Education Officer - SEN of Georgetown.
