UG spends $7B, expands access to medicine, engineering

The University of Guyana (UG) spent $7 billion in the first half of 2026, including funds related to expanding access to medicine and engineering programmes.

As part of that expansion, UG extended its pre-medicine programme to all regions in April, with 80 students currently benefiting.

More than 400 applications are also being processed for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The university is also providing regional access to engineering, with 27 students in Regions Two and Six currently pursuing civil and mechanical engineering at its regional centres.

In February 2026, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced that the University of Guyana will soon have its School of Medicine and the full suite of engineering programmes fully operational at the Tain Campus in Berbice.

Additionally, he outlined a broader strategy to decentralise higher education and strengthen the country’s health and technical workforce.

“The University of Guyana must ensure that all engineering courses

are offered here in Berbice. We have all of the facilities here now…. and

the School of Medicine must be fully operational here in Berbice,” he said.

The expansion advances the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Government’s 2025 manifesto commitment.

The investment is also supporting the government’s effort to bring university education closer to students, particularly in critical fields such as medicine and engineering.
