“What’s in the Oven?” Launches Today!

With apron wrapped and hairnet tied, Minister of Education, the Honourable Savitri Sonia Parag, this morning delivered the feature address at the launch of EDYOU FM’s “What’s in the Oven?” Bake-Off Competition at the Beterverwagting Practical Instructional Centre.

The competition, featuring CSEC Food, Nutrition & Health students from Christianburg Wismar Secondary, Queen’s College, and West Demerara Secondary, is underway as part of Education Month 2025. Minister Parag expressed her delight at the technical skills on display and reminded participants that whatever the outcome, the skills and experiences gained must be used to keep moving forward.

“Technical training is like a rubber band in its elasticity; it allows our children to stretch and become their very best selves,” Minister Parag explained, emphasising the need for a holistic approach to education. She credited His Excellency, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, for spearheading the broader vision to ensure that Guyanese youth are well-rounded and equipped to thrive in an economy that is rapidly diversifying.

Minister Parag highlighted that initiatives such as this are aligned with national strategies to prepare students not only for academic excellence but also for career readiness in hospitality, tourism, agri-food, and entrepreneurship. “This is about giving our young people the confidence, exposure, and opportunities to be leaders in every field,” she said.

She also wished the competitors well and promised that one day she too would reveal her baking skills.

The Ministry of Education will continue to host activities throughout September in celebration of Education Month, under the theme of equipping students with the skills, values, and knowledge to embrace the future.

Education Month 2025 is being held under the theme: Quality Education for National Development.
